Brighter Than The Sun - Canadian Mall Christmas Lights

The Green Team at British Columbia's largest shopping center, Metropolis at Metrotown, has published a list of 9 Ways to Greenify Your Holidays. Number 6 on their list is shocking to me. It says "All the energy we use to power our Christmas lights could power one million homes! Use LED lights, they consume 95% less energy than regular lights". When they say 'we', do they mean the mall, British Columbia, or all of Canada? We're talking a Griswold family Christmas, here! [via Metropolis At Metrotown]

Free Legal Music - SpiralFrog

SpiralFrog is a place to download free, legal music. I know what you're thinking - the music sucks or is from the early 1900s or is from no-name bands, right? Nope! The site is supported by advertising so, the more than one million songs available for download are well-known, desirable tracks. Some of the top downloads include:
  • Heartless by Kanye West.
  • Hot N Cold by Katy Perry.
  • Spaceman by The Killers
  • Lips Of An Angel by Hinder

Humanitarians And Supercomputers - A Perfect Match

Did you know that you can donate your computer's unused time to help save the world? The World Community Grid is an IBM-funded project that ties people's personal computers into a grid or supercomputer that is used to tackle scientific research projects. One such project is the Clean Energy Project. This one seeks to find new combinations of organic materials for the next generation of solar cells and later, energy storage devices. The Clean Energy Project will process over 1 million configurations of atoms in the next two years. The time it would take without such an effort - 20 years! [via CleanTechnica.com]

Whoops! - Useless Vasectomies

Okay... you and your wife have knocked out 3.5 kids and your wife thinks it's time for you to visit the urologist. That's right, the V-word. Vasectomy. You go through with it, but the unexpected happens. Now you've got 4.5 kids. As it turns out, about one in 100 vasectomies doesn't do it's job - the sperm count not being low enough. The magic number? Below one million per milliliter, according to the World Health Organization. [via Mail Online]

In Your Face, Facebook! - Coming December 15th

A group of disgruntled Facebook users have joined together to boycott their master and Facebook creator, Mark Zuckerberg, and the world he created. They have some beef with the new layout and the way Facebook works and blah, blah, blah. This is what I like to call OurWeb 2.0 - where the users of overpriced internet sites make all the business decisions (or think they do, at least). More than 1 million Facebook users have signed up to boycott Facebook on December 15th by not using Facebook all day. That will show'em. [via The New York Observer]

Putrid Pork - Ireland's Dioxin-Tainted Pigs

Don't eat the other white meat! There is currently a bill in the works to recall all pork products made from pigs slaughtered in Ireland. It is estimated that about 10 percent of Irish pigs were fed dioxins, a highly carcinogenic and toxic compound. Ireland exports about 1 million euros of pig meat a day [Bloomberg.com]. It seems the Irish will be the ones doing the kissing here - of their profits... goodbye.

P.S. this pig was dioxin-free.

Out Of The Foot Locker - Gay Soldier Support

The United States has a "Don't ask, don't tell" policy when it comes to gays and lesbians serving in the armed forces. This prohibits gays from openly serving. In other words, don't tell us your gay, we'll let you risk your life for us, and if we do happen to find out that you're gay, then we'll kick you out. This could someday change, however, as a group of retired general and admirals is actively seeking to change the current policy. It is estimated that there are approximately one million gay and lesbian veterans in the United States today [PinkNews.co.uk].

Keeping Aloe Vera Farmers In Business

As if global warming and holes in the ozone layer aren't enough, it seems a rather large segment of society craves that extra dose of ultraviolet radiation. The experts in leathery skin, the American Academy of Dermatology, say that more than 1 million people visit tanning salons on an average day [Salt Lake Community College Globe]. That's hot.
